Waxhaw cheerleading fracture?

Kristina McDaniel and Rori Burke used to operate the Waxhaw Flyers cheerleading organization. (And to those of you who followed this link, yes, this web page is far too busy.)

If I'm not mistaken, my understanding is this pair got their start via the WAA (Waxhaw Athletic Association) and then left to start the Waxhaw Flyers much to the WAA's chagrin. Per a recent Facebook update to Jim Black's Land of the Waxhaws, it appears Kristina may have now split off to start her own group, Spirit Extreme All Stars.

Assuming I'm reading this right (a big if as I daresay I don't stay up-to-date on the local cheerleading scene), this is good news for local consumers of cheerleading as more options are available for their girls.

But a small part of me can't help but wonder if this may have something to do with the unfortunate incidents that came to light in March of this year with regards to Chad Blume, the Waxhaw resident who faces charges of sexually exploiting a minor and taking indecent liberties with a child and who also happened to be a volunteer photographer for the Waxhaw Flyers.

Like I mentioned in tonight's earlier post, the Blume case is one of those stories where an update is sorely needed.

UPDATE 6/26: A belated update, but I received an email from a representative of the Waxhaw Flyers chalking this up to "creative differences" and not the unfortunate Chad Blume situation. Good luck to both businesses!

Waxhaw 5K results

The Seventh Annual Waxhaw Town & Country Run took place this weekend. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend and get any pictures because of a scheduled baseball game where I was needed to yell repeatedly to my kids to pay attention.

My wife ran again and finished with an excellent time, coming in 8th in her age group so kudos to her and everyone else who ran.

Times have been posted online for those interested but here's the top runners:

Nearly a year ago, I announced a goal of running a 5K before year's end. The year's now nearly up and while I have taken up running and run a number of unofficial 5K races around the neighborhood, odds of entering an official 5K before June 10th look slim.

UPDATE: GingerSnap 5k

I briefly mentioned this in a prior post, but the GingerSnap 5K takes place in Waxhaw on December 3rd. My wife is already signed up to run.

For those interested, you can still sign up here. Proceeds support "Girls on the Run."

UPDATE 12/2: The GingerSnap 5K is still looking for volunteers for tomorrow morning's race. Citizens of Waxhaw unite! And then sign up here.

Marathon update (for real this time)

I discussed last Friday the appalling lack of marathon updates from Tim (of Waxhaw fame) as he tries to run 12 marathons in 12 months.

Perhaps egged on by my post or perhaps due to that guilty feeling you get when not keeping up with your blog, Tim has posted updates to marathons #7, 8, and 9. Follow the links to read each post-marathon follow-up.

Could this be the first time this blog has affected real positive change in Waxhaw? I'll let you be the judge.

Marathon update

Earlier in the year, I was blogging regularly on Tim's attempt to run one marathon a month for a year.

But if you follow the aforementioned link, you'll notice there's been nary an update since July.

If your first thought is that I have been deficient in keeping up with them (a la the old monthly crime reports), you would be wrong.

If your next thought is that Tim was unable to keep up with this demanding challenge, you would again be mistaken.

If your final thought is that Tim's been completing the marathons, but no longer blogging about them, then you would be correct. One for three isn't too bad.

Number 9 is in the books, so there's only three more to go. If and when he begins blogging about them again, I'll try to link to them.

Parks & Rec Master Plan meeting tomorrow

Coinciding with First Friday, the final Parks & Rec Master Plan meeting will occur at the Waxhaw Woman's Club on Friday per a Facebook post.
Parks and Rec Master Plan meeting Friday, November 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Waxhaw Woman's Club. Come give us your ideas and enter to win prizes donated by local merchants!

Raffle Prizes: 1) A Snap Fitness Membership, Group Ex Trial, A Smoothie and T-shirt.
2) Four hours of garden services for your edible landscape provided by The Garden Growers. They will design, perform maintenance, troubleshoot or build an organic kitchen garden for you. A $100 value.
So while you're walking around town for First Friday, don't forget to stop by and share your opinion.

Hopefully upgrades over at Nesbit Park (behind Kensington Elementary) will be a frequent request by those who stop in. Besides getting some lights for the ball fields over there, more parking is essential. They removed some of the parking down near the soccer fields due to safety concerns. With three new fields (2 baseball and 1 multipurpose) on the way, it will be important to upgrade the parking.

If you feel similarly, please stop by and let them know how important the issue is to you. And sign up for the aforementioned raffles while you're there.

Update on WAA volunteers

Rick Giarla sent out another email to WAA parents requesting volunteers for the BBQ cook-off this weekend at the Autumn Treasures festival, previously mentioned here.

I'd estimate 20 volunteers signed up today, but by my count, 47 more are still needed.

Twenty out of forty tasting servers are still needed for 12.30p-3.00p on Sunday.

Twenty-one out of forty servers/clean up persons are needed for the 3.00p-5.30p shift on Sunday as well.

So if you can spare a small shift, either in one of the aforementioned shifts or the other slots where someone is needed, please sign up.

UPDATE 10/5: It's just updates on top of updates here at the Broome Street Blues. As of 12.42p, only 39 volunteers needed with a couple more days left to fill the slots. Keep 'em coming!

WAA needs volunteers!

I mentioned earlier that the proceeds of this year's BBQ cook-off at the Autumn Treasures festival will benefit the Waxhaw Athletic Association. However, they need a lot of volunteers to assist with the BBQ cook-off.

So all WAA parents and supporters need to step up and spare a few hours if at all possible to help out. They've set up a sign-up sheet through signupgenius.com that makes it pretty convenient to lend a hand.

Perusing the list, it appears the biggest need is tasting servers on Sunday October 9th from 12.30p-3.00p and Servers/Clean-up people on Sunday October 9th 3.00p-5.30p. Please sign up and lend a hand. If there's a local organization other than schools that affects more local kids, I can't think of it it right now.

And donating your time to the WAA will also score you some BBQ. Rick Giarla sent an email out explaining the details:
We were just notified that ALL volunteers at this event will receive $10 in tickets to be used at the BBQ Cook-off Public Tasting on Sunday, October 9 from 1:30-4:30pm. So, when you think about it, you are getting PAID to VOLUNTEER!
I suspect there's a lot of people who can pull themselves away from Autumn Treasures for a few hours to benefit a local organization and to score some free BBQ, so please sign-up as soon as possible.

If not for the kids, then do it to help out Rick Giarla who has done tons for this community. He needs his energy for the next weekend when he plans to spend a weekend on the roof of Stack's Kitchen to benefit the South Providence school in Waxhaw proper. He needs his energy for that task rather than running around harried filling in for a lack of volunteers during Autumn Treasures. Please sign up today to lend a hand!

Upcoming WAA fundraiser

On September 10th, the WAA (Waxhaw Athletic Association) is having a big fundraiser at Nesbit Park in Waxhaw to raise money for new fields and lights if I'm not mistaken. They're dubbing it as: "Light the Night -- the First Annual Bar-B-Que Fundraiser & Camp-Out!"

The daytime festivities start at 10am and run until 3pm and include lots of activities for kids and parents. For the kids, there's a soccer kick-off, basketball shoot out, home run derby (softball and baseball), wiffle ball tournament, cheer competition and game, and a fastest pitch contest. And even if your kids don't participate in any of these, a good time can still be had.

Food (including Butch Kelly's BBQ) will be available (pre-ordering is cheaper FWIW); live music will be played. First aid and raffle tickets will be available respectively for the worriers and the lucky.

And for those of you who enjoy the outdoors, you can come back at 6pm to camp out for $15 to enjoy a movie (TBD?) popcorn, and a bonfire for roasting marshmallows.

It should be a good time for those of you who'd like to support local athletics without leaving the friendly confines of Waxhaw.

Marathon #6

Tim has completed marathon #6 for those following his mind-boggling attempt to run 12 marathons in 12 months. This one was up a mountain no less.

In other news, I went running with my wife for a second time a couple weeks ago and my knee couldn't take any more beating after 2 miles. I told my wife to go on without me.

UPDATE: Waxhaw Marathon post-mortem

On Saturday June 18th, Tim Junkins of Get Fit Carolinas won what I imagine is Waxhaw's first marathon. It matters little he was the only participant to run the entire 26+ miles. I've mentioned it in earlier posts here and here.

Well, being a 21st century blog, it's only fitting that I actually bling this site up with some images of the historic event. I just got my hands on pictures my wife took.

Here's the Waxhaw 1-Man Marathon shirt:

And here's Tim being escorted home by some members of his Blue Ridge Relay racing team.

Waxhaw 1-Man Marathon nearly over

And the bling picture of Tim's bling:

Waxhaw Marathon Trophy

I find it utterly amazing that Tim has yet to update his blog on this marathon yet. If he's anything like me, he's likely still recovering from running 26 miles.

UPDATE 6/27: Tim's firsthand account of Waxhaw's 1-Man Marathon is now online. Check it out.

NBA'er buying home in Waxhaw

Just stumbled across this when reading about former Davidson star Stephen Curry, but apparently he and his fiancée have purchased a home in Waxhaw.
More importantly, there's his future. He will marry Ayesha Alexander on July 30 in Charlotte. The two met in a church youth group when she was 14 and he was 15 and have dated since Curry was a sophomore at Davidson. Curry, 23, has purchased a house in Waxhaw and plans for that to be the young couple's home base.
Since he plays for the Golden State Warriors, I imagine they won't live here year round. So certain celebrity Waxhaw bloggers can breathe a sigh of relief in the fact that Stephen Curry likely won't be taking an inordinate amount of the local media's adoring limelight from them.

Waxhaw marathon still scheduled for Saturday

I mentioned it earlier, but I just wanted to remind you that Waxhaw's first(?) marathon is a go for early Saturday morning.

Starting at 6.30am on Saturday morning, Tim's marathon of one begins and ends in Waxhaw. A map of the course is available for those of you interested in cheering him on. He'll have Gatorade and water stations every three mile to help him along the way.

I'll end by quoting Tim:
"The competition is fierce this year, but I am hoping to pull out my first marathon victory!!"

Waxhaw marathon?

Word has it that there will be a Waxhaw marathon next weekend. First ever?

I've been following Tim's blog of Get Fit Carolinas fame as he attempts to run 12 marathons in 12 months - earlier posts here, here, here, and here. Apparently there were no nearby marathons to attend so Tim decided to make his own here in Waxhaw for next weekend.

Sounds like a fun idea. If I can get some more details, I'll share them here.

In other news, I'm attempting a similar goal of running one 5K in the next 12 months, so I will try to keep you posted on how that goes. We're about three months away and I've yet to start training.

Marathon #4 follow-up

I had heard Tim had run marathon #4, but here's the after-action report to prove it. A snippet:
This is where the fireman positioned on that marker decided to “support me” by saying “this is where you find out if you’re a man or not”! I just ran 4 killer hills and 16 miles, and I’m still not a MAN?!?! Well…up I went. Two 174ft climbs on both mile 16 and 17 at a sometimes 16.1 % grade!!
The course seems a little too three-dimensional for my tastes.

Marathon #4 already?

Word is that Tim of Get Fit Carolinas ran his fourth marathon, only a week after the third. In other news, I shagged a couple base hits, running all the way from second base to left field earlier today and was ready to take a breather.

No update from his blog as of yet though.

Marathon #3 completed

Numerous sources had informed me that Tim of GetFitCarolinas fame had completed his third of twelve marathons. As I mentioned here, Tim has plans to run twelve marathons in one year.

And based on his recent blog post, my sources appear to be vindicated, so they will maintain their desirable status on my speed dial.

This one took place in Nashville and featured bands playing throughout the route. And apparently beer.
I was able to have my first beer during a marathon on mile 23! I have to say that it was one of the best beers I have ever had!
I think if more people knew beer was available en route, marathons might be more popular than 5K's.

We're a go for the Town & Country 5K

Well, my wife is. As for me, I have a tee ball game to assist in coaching and as we all know, an assistant coach's job is never done.

Because of the game, I'm a little bummed out I won't be able to get any pictures of this year's winner (or my wife) as they go zooming by. Oh well.

Marathon madness

Our friend Tim has a blog detailing his journey as he runs twelve marathons in the Carolinas in twelve months. This blew my mind as I visualized the pounding my ankles and knees would take from running this much and it isn't pretty.

He's two marathons down at this point, leaving ten more to go, so you can follow the muscle-cramping shin-splitting journey in all its glory here. (At least that's how I envision it. Tim might dispute that description.)

And if you thought twelve marathons was a lot, here's a snippet of his encounter running into other marathon junkies:
So I started to talk to a gentleman named Joe. As I was telling him about my quest for 12 in 12 he HUMBLED me, in a nice way, by what his achievements in the last 365 days have been….33 marathons in 365 days!!! As he talked, and I didn’t another young man walked up that knew Joe and introduced himself as Daniel. I was then Humbled once again with his achievements in the last 365 days of 55 marathons!!! I also met a 55 year old on his 73rd lifetime race, and ran with a 67 year old on his 173rd life time marathon!!! Ya’ll think I’m crazy?!!
Marathons runners are truly one of a kind.

Tim recently started a personal training business called Get Fit Carolinas. He will apparently have a booth set up at this Saturday's WAA opening day festivities at the fields of Kensington Elementary, perhaps dishing out marathoning gossip, perhaps not. I will miss it unfortunately, but if I find gold in them thar hills this weekend, it'll all be worth it.

WAA cheerleaders find a place to call their own

My wife told me about WAA's new "office" on the same walk from which this tip originated. But thanks to Lacey's article in the Enquirer-Journal, the mystery is solved.

The cheerleaders have found a new home. Read the whole thing for all the details.
