UPDATE: Waxhaw Marathon post-mortem

On Saturday June 18th, Tim Junkins of Get Fit Carolinas won what I imagine is Waxhaw's first marathon. It matters little he was the only participant to run the entire 26+ miles. I've mentioned it in earlier posts here and here.

Well, being a 21st century blog, it's only fitting that I actually bling this site up with some images of the historic event. I just got my hands on pictures my wife took.

Here's the Waxhaw 1-Man Marathon shirt:

And here's Tim being escorted home by some members of his Blue Ridge Relay racing team.

And the bling picture of Tim's bling:

I find it utterly amazing that Tim has yet to update his blog on this marathon yet. If he's anything like me, he's likely still recovering from running 26 miles.

UPDATE 6/27: Tim's firsthand account of Waxhaw's 1-Man Marathon is now online. Check it out.

Waxhaw marathon still scheduled for Saturday

I mentioned it earlier, but I just wanted to remind you that Waxhaw's first(?) marathon is a go for early Saturday morning.

Starting at 6.30am on Saturday morning, Tim's marathon of one begins and ends in Waxhaw. A map of the course is available for those of you interested in cheering him on. He'll have Gatorade and water stations every three mile to help him along the way.

I'll end by quoting Tim:
"The competition is fierce this year, but I am hoping to pull out my first marathon victory!!"

Marathon update (for real this time)

I discussed last Friday the appalling lack of marathon updates from Tim (of Waxhaw fame) as he tries to run 12 marathons in 12 months.

Perhaps egged on by my post or perhaps due to that guilty feeling you get when not keeping up with your blog, Tim has posted updates to marathons #7, 8, and 9. Follow the links to read each post-marathon follow-up.

Could this be the first time this blog has affected real positive change in Waxhaw? I'll let you be the judge.

Marathon madness

Our friend Tim has a blog detailing his journey as he runs twelve marathons in the Carolinas in twelve months. This blew my mind as I visualized the pounding my ankles and knees would take from running this much and it isn't pretty.

He's two marathons down at this point, leaving ten more to go, so you can follow the muscle-cramping shin-splitting journey in all its glory here. (At least that's how I envision it. Tim might dispute that description.)

And if you thought twelve marathons was a lot, here's a snippet of his encounter running into other marathon junkies:
So I started to talk to a gentleman named Joe. As I was telling him about my quest for 12 in 12 he HUMBLED me, in a nice way, by what his achievements in the last 365 days have been….33 marathons in 365 days!!! As he talked, and I didn’t another young man walked up that knew Joe and introduced himself as Daniel. I was then Humbled once again with his achievements in the last 365 days of 55 marathons!!! I also met a 55 year old on his 73rd lifetime race, and ran with a 67 year old on his 173rd life time marathon!!! Ya’ll think I’m crazy?!!
Marathons runners are truly one of a kind.

Tim recently started a personal training business called Get Fit Carolinas. He will apparently have a booth set up at this Saturday's WAA opening day festivities at the fields of Kensington Elementary, perhaps dishing out marathoning gossip, perhaps not. I will miss it unfortunately, but if I find gold in them thar hills this weekend, it'll all be worth it.

Marathon #4 already?

Word is that Tim of Get Fit Carolinas ran his fourth marathon, only a week after the third. In other news, I shagged a couple base hits, running all the way from second base to left field earlier today and was ready to take a breather.

No update from his blog as of yet though.

Waxhaw marathon?

Word has it that there will be a Waxhaw marathon next weekend. First ever?

I've been following Tim's blog of Get Fit Carolinas fame as he attempts to run 12 marathons in 12 months - earlier posts here, here, here, and here. Apparently there were no nearby marathons to attend so Tim decided to make his own here in Waxhaw for next weekend.

Sounds like a fun idea. If I can get some more details, I'll share them here.

In other news, I'm attempting a similar goal of running one 5K in the next 12 months, so I will try to keep you posted on how that goes. We're about three months away and I've yet to start training.

Marathon #6

Tim has completed marathon #6 for those following his mind-boggling attempt to run 12 marathons in 12 months. This one was up a mountain no less.

In other news, I went running with my wife for a second time a couple weeks ago and my knee couldn't take any more beating after 2 miles. I told my wife to go on without me.

Marathon #4 follow-up

I had heard Tim had run marathon #4, but here's the after-action report to prove it. A snippet:
This is where the fireman positioned on that marker decided to “support me” by saying “this is where you find out if you’re a man or not”! I just ran 4 killer hills and 16 miles, and I’m still not a MAN?!?! Well…up I went. Two 174ft climbs on both mile 16 and 17 at a sometimes 16.1 % grade!!
The course seems a little too three-dimensional for my tastes.

Marathon #3 completed

Numerous sources had informed me that Tim of GetFitCarolinas fame had completed his third of twelve marathons. As I mentioned here, Tim has plans to run twelve marathons in one year.

And based on his recent blog post, my sources appear to be vindicated, so they will maintain their desirable status on my speed dial.

This one took place in Nashville and featured bands playing throughout the route. And apparently beer.
I was able to have my first beer during a marathon on mile 23! I have to say that it was one of the best beers I have ever had!
I think if more people knew beer was available en route, marathons might be more popular than 5K's.

Marathon update

Earlier in the year, I was blogging regularly on Tim's attempt to run one marathon a month for a year.

But if you follow the aforementioned link, you'll notice there's been nary an update since July.

If your first thought is that I have been deficient in keeping up with them (a la the old monthly crime reports), you would be wrong.

If your next thought is that Tim was unable to keep up with this demanding challenge, you would again be mistaken.

If your final thought is that Tim's been completing the marathons, but no longer blogging about them, then you would be correct. One for three isn't too bad.

Number 9 is in the books, so there's only three more to go. If and when he begins blogging about them again, I'll try to link to them.
